Barista pulling an espresso shot at the Ember & Oak counter in warm morning light

Mill District · Portland, OR

Your morning, done right.

A neighborhood coffee shop built around a single idea: that the morning cup deserves real care — and a place to sit a while.

Fall seasonal is back · Saturday 8–11am is the busiest window

The Ritual

A seat at the regulars' table.

Somewhere around 7:45 the room tilts — the first wave of regulars files in, orders are half-shouted across the bar before they're finished being placed, and a barista is already pulling a second for someone who hasn't walked in yet.

By 9, the long table by the window is full of people who didn't plan to sit together and now have. By 11, it's quiet enough to read. This is the rhythm of the Mill District mornings, and it's the whole reason the shop exists.

No app order. No timer. Just a cup made by someone who knows how you take it — and a chair held a while longer than you'd expect.

The Coffee

Sourced small. Roasted close. Brewed by hand.

Our house blend is roasted by a small roaster we've worked with for years, and we brew it two ways: as espresso on the bar and as pour-over for the single origins we rotate each month. Confirm the current roaster and beans at the counter before you share it — this is a placeholder until the shop verifies it.

Two brews, no shortcuts: the house blend on the espresso bar, and whatever single origin we're curious about this month — poured by hand, one cup at a time.

Before You Visit

Good questions, plain answers.

Do you have wifi?

Yes — free and unlimited. We only ask that you're mindful of table turnover during the morning rush (about 8–11am), when neighbors are waiting for a seat.

Can I work here?

Please do. There are outlets along the long wall and it's laptop-friendly outside peak hours. Mornings belong to people catching up; afternoons belong to anyone with a deadline.

Do you sell beans to take home?

Whole bean, every day, ground to order for whatever you brew on. Ask the counter about a monthly subscription — skip or pause anytime.

What about dairy-free options?

Oat, almond, and coconut milk at no upcharge. We also keep a handful of pastries that are dairy-free — just ask what's in the case today.

Do you do catering or events?

Coffee catering for offices and morning meetings, yes — and we host small after-hours events. Email us with the date and head count and we'll put something together.

Still unsure? Call the shop — (503) 555-0182
